What’s It Like Being a Student?
A blend of tech-based learning and in-person instruction provides flexibility and structure.
At Northpoint Charter School, we believe there is no one path to a bright future. That’s why our program is built on a foundation of flexibility and choice. We give students the tools they need to succeed while letting them take the driver’s seat in their own education.
Before attending Northpoint or any other charter school, it’s important to understand what to expect. That’s why we strongly recommend that all prospective students and their family members tour the campus before applying. We do things a little differently than more traditional public schools, and understanding those differences is the key to knowing whether Northpoint is right for you.
Tech-Based Learning
The first thing prospective students may notice about Northpoint is that the majority of our coursework is offered online through the Edgenuity platform. Students can access course materials from home as well as our Main Lab on campus.
This tech-based approach to learning allows for greater flexibility and variety. The curriculum is Common Core-aligned and academically rigorous, and students can choose from a robust catalog of available courses.
Students are empowered to solve problems and blaze their own paths, but they never have to do it alone. Dedicated support teachers and educational assistants are available to answer questions, help students with assignments, and give one-on-one instruction to support their online learning.
Other in-person learning opportunities are available as well, including intensive classes in English and mathematics, as well as our unique hands-on Smart Lab where students work on self-directed projects to master STEAM principles.
Flexible Scheduling and Self-Guided Lessons
Aside from the variety of courses available to Northpoint students, our approach to learning also allows for greater flexibility and a more personalized education.
Each student can have a personalized schedule for the term to fit their needs and lifestyle. This might include half-days or a blend of in-person and at-home schooling. Students who need time in their week for jobs, sports, hobbies, or family obligations can build a schedule around their needs rather than the demands of a classroom.
Students are also empowered to structure their days in a way that helps them learn best. Some students prefer to work on a mix of subjects throughout the day. Others prefer to dedicate each day to a different subject. Students can progress quickly through the material if they wish, even taking extra classes during the term if they finish the first course early.
Many of our Northpoint Charter students take advantage of dual enrollment, allowing them to take college classes for free while enrolled as high schoolers. These students divide their time between our campus and the college campus, and they have access to all of our teachers and tutoring resources as well as the assistance offered by the college.
Clubs, Sports and Activities
Student life at Northpoint isn’t just focused on academics. We host a variety of sports, clubs, and activities, and students are encouraged to take an active role in forming these groups and helping to maintain them.
Our student activities include:
- Team sports like basketball and soccer
- Esports
- Tabletop and board games
- Robotics club
- Student Council
Clubs and activities change each year based on student interest. Students interested in playing a sport we don’t offer can play for their district’s public school team in accordance with Albuquerque Charter School League rules.
